Spring has officially sprung, and if you’ve been following along here at SBI, you know how happy this makes us. Refer to our last blog entry for inspiration on how to incorporate the season into your home. Spoiler alert…one of those ways is with window treatments. Textiles are to a window, what a frame is to a picture. An elegant window treatment truly has the capability of transforming a space.
Not only are window treatments crucial for the overall aesthetic of your space, they also have the potential to be cost savers. It’s estimated about 30% of a home’s heating energy is lost through windows. Thanks to several energy-efficient options available, we can steal some of that back.
Textiles are to a window, what a frame is to a picture.
Ok, enough small talk, let’s skip to the good part…Below we highlighted three window treatment options, guaranteed to leave your windows dressed-to-impress, and maybe save you money!
1. SHADES
With countless styles on the market today, there is truly a shade solution for every home owner. Here are three of our favorites.
- Roman Shades – Consider these a hybrid between drapes and blinds. The look of a blind and the feel of a drape. Fabric options with roman shades are endless, so you have the opportunity to have as much fun or be as conservative as you want. Roman shades are the perfect window treatment to add buttons, ribbons, or trim for a bit of whimsy.

This sweet striped roman shade is available and on sale now at Pottery Barn. It’s giving us major Hampton’s vibes.
- Woven Shades – Essentially an organic approach to the fabric roman shade. The beautiful earth tones add texture and dimension, while the natural elements add richness and depth to create a cozy atmosphere. The woven textile can be made of bamboo reed, bamboo slat, sisal, grass, jute and other straw materials.

These natural bamboo shades from Pottery Barn kids are a perfect way to warm up any neutral pallet.
- Cellular Shades – These probably haven’t been on your radar, but trust us when we say they should be. They are an excellent option if energy-efficiency is at the top of your list. Homes with children and pets can rest easy knowing choke-hazards are eliminated with the cordless operating system, and if your home has uniquely shaped windows needing coverage, the cellular shades can be made to fit.

These cellular shades from Hunter Douglas allow light in where you want, block it where you don’t, and take up little visual real estate.
2. DRAPES
Depending on your need (light filtering, room darkening, aesthetics, etc…) drapes are an excellent way to achieve either or all of those. Custom drapes offer the chance to get as opulent or as modest as you wish, while ready-made drapes offer a more affordable solution. For a more dramatic look, opt for heavier weight fabrics. For a more aethereal approach, look for something sheer and lightweight. Drapes are an excellent way to bring in pattern and color. Don’t forget the hardware! This is the jewelry of the entire ensemble. Glass, reflective metals, natural wood, whatever your aesthetic, hardware completes the look.

We are suckers for velvet, linen, and gold, and these dreamy drapes from West Elm give all three.
3. SHUTTERS
If you’ve ever visited low country (or if you’re lucky enough to live there,) you know shutters are as much a requirement for the home as a front door. Did you know shutters aren’t limited to your home’s exterior? Arguably the most luxurious option of the three on our list, shutters beckon back to a time of magnolia trees and double front porches. The good news is, you don’t have to live near a coastline or reside in the deep south to enjoy their beauty and grandeur. Made from either vinyl or wood, price points vary based on what your specific budget allows.

Give us these shutters at this tree-top resort any day. But if we can’t have that, we’ll just take them at home please.
With so many options and functions available it may seem overwhelming. No fear, that’s why SBI is here. Visit shannanbowerinteriors.com and let’s set up a time to chat!
